NEW YEAR>>>> 2008-2009......
Okay, I have heard back from many and almost everyone likes Thursday, so we'll run with that. Here are my proposed dates for meetings. Please email me back if I have set up bad ones due to already scheduled events. I have listed PALMS board meeting dates below my name as an FYI. Our meeting time is traditionally 5:15ish
_
The North County PLC met at TGIFriday’s on Thursday, Feb 19,2009 from 5: 15 pm until 7:30pm (2.25 hours)
Those present:
Cindy Millisor
Nancy Millichamp
Lora Polgar
Anne O’Brien

Gianne Mustra
Mary Durina
Flo McGee

We began with websites – free: jeopardylabs.com(courtesy of Donna Hall), www.flashcardmachine.com <http://www.flashcardmachine.com> – you can share with small groups within your school or with the public, you can print the cards, you can import from excel ,
www.countryreports.com <http://www.countryreports.com> –paid for but so helpful to all levels of students. Jackie brought a synopsis of things she thought were useful from FETC, including www.digitalbooktalk.com <http://www.digitalbooktalk.com> , www.Jamstudio.com <http://www.Jamstudio.com>
www.elluminate.com <http://www.elluminate.com>
On 4/23/2009, there will be a chance to attend FETC online – register at virtual.fetc.org (see Flo if more info needed)
The Battle of the Books may be taken by students on the moodle. Some questions were raised regarding issues related to individual schools – talk to Donna Hall.
We agreed to post three lessons each through the glossary on the moodle page , so that we could help each other out. All lessons need to be posted by the end of spring break if possible.
A discussion then took place rearding the closing of several schools, the placement of the LIS’s who had been at those schools and comments made at different gatherings regarding budget cuts. Some people had had direct discussions with their principals that led them to believe that if a site based decision was made, their positions would be cut. Bonnie said that John Just felt such discussions were premature. (By the way, if you read Dr. Janssen’s recent
Discussions with different area reps. ,school based decision was defined as a vote by the faculty- please check this and let me know if this is incorrect ). Bonnie felt any actions taken should come from our professional organization. Doubts were raised as to the efficacy of any action, whether it be a letter, presentation or whatever, but some felt we might be sorry if we did not remind those in charge of our educational value. Some felt direct discussion with our own principals might be a more effective approach. A discussion was held regarding a PALMS letter to thank John Just, Harry Brown, and Catherine Fleeger for their continued support of our positions as acknowledgement of their awareness of our impact on highest student achievement. Nothing was resolved, many questions were raised, all expressed concern for the profession itself , rather than personal costs.
Respectfully submitted.

We began the session by focusing on Fey’s request to work on IPDPs . We discussed the use of valuable data in the Destiny reports; the fact that it is possible to pull patrons by FCAT and circulation stats. Some people use Reading Counts for their IPDP, some use Student Literacy Programs participation.
We discussed the value of a monthly statistical report- Bonnie has sent out templates for this in the past.
Will the Moodle site have a place where we can share and place items for classes etc? It would be nice to be able to share good ideas in one common area.
Playaways – very popular with elementary schools- checked out to teachers for use in classrooms.
There were questions regarding the Follett ebooks. While the Capstone books work well, and the Gale Electronic Reference Library works well, the 65 books from Follett appear to still be a mystery. Are they only to be checked out to one patron at a time? Doesn’t seem very user friendly at this point.
Julie-Ann shared info about a cool piece of software, Comic Life. She is using this as a reading incentive reward. The program enables students to construct their own graphic novels. When the students have read three of the Sunshine State books and passed the Reading Counts Test, they may do their Book Report in this format and then have it shared over the school’s network. This sounds like a great form of writing reinforcement for any level. Product is published by PLASQ.
Mary Durina bought a set of the 15 SSYRA books for each of her teachers and sent curriculum correlations , web maps and story maps to go with each.
The NIE Blogs for the Sunshine State Books have great questions. Lots of higher level thinking questions and opportunities for different subject areas to write cross curriculum.
Everyone was very excited regarding the possibility of Receiving all reading Counts quizzes, there was just some concern about time. We know budgetary issues must come first, so we are not whining, just wondering. The meeting was adjourned around 7:15.
Next meeting will be Nov 20.
Respectfully ,
Katie ONeil
Sept 18th - TGIFriday's near Countryside (Yort didn't get enough to eat at Grillsmiths!) (We'll pick the next meeting place together- I am big fan of Twisted Bamboo)
Topic: Ways to introduce the new Destiny to students and staff and setting up year long planning to avoid hysteria later on, and anything you wish to add. We will brainstorm most helpful topics for future meetings as well.

After an initial discussion of the big news of the evening; Dr. Wilcox’s resignation, we discussed the following:
Suggestions for getting all materials back successfully at the end of the year: elementary: a party of some kind for first class with all materials turned in, middle school, lottery for prizes for all students whose materials were turned in on time, support from administration for withholding yearbooks until last day if materials are not turned in promptly. High school- graduation requirement helps with some returns, but not all.
It was suggested that time for articulation between levels as well as time to discuss the information literacy standards in this context would be a great activity to have on our professional day.
Some schools have managed to have schoolwide support for fundraising to pay for a clerk for the LIS.
Have all principals and school board members received a copy of the new updated version of the Scholastic Publication School Libraries Work! (?)
Given the present job climate, this might be a good PR move for us to make sure they have– is this a Bonnie thing or is this something we could do? Don’t want to mess anyone up.
Making a decision as to what is the priority for your time use is an individual professional decision based on school needs and population, student literacy programs are a great supplemental tool.
Evaluations – it was pointed out that surveys have become an important part of our evaluations. Surveymonkey.com can make this a fairly painless process – perhaps next year, we could agree to set up a survey as a group, then share. Kimen sent out hers several years ago, and it was most helpful.
Kate Kohler’s middle school battle of the books cooperative activity was very successful this year-(thanks Kate) – she plans to make a few revisions and apply the same idea next year- middle school LIS should let her know if they are interested.
Books of interest to specific groups were discussed – selection of materials for boys, the diversity issue in schools, finding periodicals that are multicultural , and yet not inappropriate for our students is a challenge.
We are getting mixed reviews on Learn360 – but I believe more videos are being added daily?
Mary Helen is working on the shared calendar idea- thanks Mary Helen!
That’s it for this school year, see you at the PALMS banquet in May- I’m sure more info on that is coming soon!
Respectfully submitted

NEWS>>>>> new messages....
Minutes: from Jan.10,2008
Training and party! ... Was held at Oldsmar Elementary .. We ate a lot of chicken and enjoyed some great company. I think there were about 8 of us in attendance. I am hoping to get a list of those that I miss but I forgot to put out a sign-in sheet. We played FMPro Bingo.. and learned how to use FileMaker to create simple bingo cards that can be used for just about any subject.. We also learned how to use the database program for labels. We spoke briefly about wiki's but got further off into a discussion of using PhotoStory with the students. This lead into a "helping one another" with lots of great ideas flying around. At our next meeting --- FEB7th ... I will try to gradb and add more to these minutes??

Topics discussed were: The SSYRA Blog. Bonnie would like to see a greater level of participation. while she got a great response when she introduced the idea, as is often true with something new, participation is not at the level wished for. Also, students are not currently asking higher level questions during discussion, merely saying how much they liked the book. Suggestion: perhaps moderators should ask more questions to elicit that types of response from students, we could announce more about the program on the morning shows, take a class on the blog and have them make a map of how to get there - make it more "cool".
SAM administration. Concerns were voiced regarding the ability to move student files from one school to another with efficacy , especially if the school has a high turnover, and communication methods are not formalized with data prep clerk. Time is an issue as well.
Building your program in elementary? Try a story time friends program using moms at the school. Some lessons for them are already posted on outlook in the LMT folder.
How come Mona has such awesome circulation stats? It's manga and anime! She is doing a lot with her graphic novels collection and the kids love it!
Got a lot of Technology responsibilities? Paulette Wireman is working on building a cadre of teacher technology specialists to help her have time to do her real job! We'll keep you posted.
Flo's filemaker tips for databases, label and more- we'll schedule a special meeting at her school with a potluck supper- everyone bring something. This will be in addition to the regular meeting schedule at FLo's convenience- for some reason, she is rather busy!
Pete mentioned exploring coffee machines as a means to lure more high school students into the LIC and issues regarding revenue to the cafeteria- bonnie will investigate this.
Some feel that the Meet the Author program is too close to the beginning of the year .Also, middle school still votes for a later start time for the event.
Great excitement regarding Emily Spiegel's (I probably misspelled that) wonderful generosity in sharing her pre and post test on quia.com- it is awesome. thanks Emily!
Discussion of how to use volunteers - recruiting etc.
